	Theory and experimentation exist in conjunction with each other, tools act as a catalyst to this creative process. My work aims to offer people an access point to using cybernetic systems as a creative space, focussing on embracing the unique benefits of the digital realm, instead of simulating our previously un-broken analogue environments.

Inspired by the process-oriented approach of the New Brutalism movement; form follows function in this work, with a simple box drawing attention to plan. The shuttered concrete and welded steel are both products of the processes used to make the structure. The time-based element of the work is expressed using light acting as a spatio-temporal translation, with circles referencing the looping behaviour of early dance music. The light interface for the pattern system is an abstracted diagram of the workings of system itself, depicting its cyclic nature.

	
Through manipulation of cyclic patterns, non-linearity is introduced by the user, shaping the composition over time. Two simple processes are chained together to produce a complex behaviour greater than the sum of its parts: inner circles producing step lengths for the outer circles’ events. Participants are encouraged to engage with the piece by interacting with the touch-plates. Being informed by light and sound, a feedback-loop is created by the users, adding entropy to the system creating unique experiences.

Looking at the relationship people have with digital
creative tools, through experimenting with using the graphical system itself as
the interface.


By using a series of
generative techniques and varying degrees of autonomy this design aims to get
the user to take on a more curatorial role of optioneering, allowing the
creative process of playing with these graphics to take on a more real-time
approach.


Inspired by the interfaces of synthesisers and drum machines
used in the production of live dance music of the early 90s the 4 modes involve
different forms of interaction and control in relationship to the same system over
time. The different behaviours of these modes aim to help users visualise the
structure of the system.

This graphical system is based off of a recursive feedback
process, inspired by the user/interface feedback loop itself.

	In 2020, I worked on a project called the Narrative Generator, this consisted of a control interface for an audio-visual system, that would invite users to play with to experience their 
own journey through the system. The system was setup in a way that if you were to use&#38;nbsp;one of the visual controls, it would affect the sound in an unknown way and vice versa. 
	

The 
device prompted the user to either explore either the visual controls or the sonic controls; and in turn witness the serendipitous results of the visual or sound they were not intentionally 
controlling.

	There is a poise between systems of distinct parts with
easily identifiable categories and fluid gradient fields of changing values. We
as people exist within this poise, both on an individual and mass scale. When looking at how computers capture and make sense of the
information they collect from us, our behavioural data can exhibit some very
life like traits of its own. 
	

This work deals with data as a form, by processing it in two
different ways; with ever fluctuating values, and also reduced into distinct components. When the distance sensor by the doorway is crossed, a noise
sound is synthesised and modulated in real-time by the raw data values seen on
the screen. On a 20 second delay, a different sound sample is played, and a
unique visual layout is generated for each distinct individual passing (of) the
sensor.

This project from 2022 was a development of previous algorithmic sequencers I had made in 
the past using Max. The goal was to chain a couple of simple processes together to create something with emergent complexity, so I combined the basic polymetric sequencer from the 
Quadraphonic Soundscapes project with a ‘List Splitting’ function I had developed. I ended up 
performing on this at an electronic open mic night. The purpose of the performance was to 
explore different ideas of time-based pattern forms using the Pattern-Generator’s non-linear 
behaviour in an improvisation. 
	

What comes out are multi-sensory (audio-visual) changes over 
time inspired by ideas of musical form such as Indian traditional counting systems, dance 
repetition, polyrhythms, and drones. All interesting areas of music because of the unique way 
musicians navigate their rules and frameworks to create composition.Currently I am working to turn this sequencer into a MaxforLive device to allow other Ableton users to have access to.
